:: Jules Maidoff

Born in New York City in 1933.

Studied at the Art High School in New York and at the Art Students League with Harry Sternberg, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Reginald Marsh, John Sloan and Ben Shahn. From 1950 Maidoff was at the Cooper Union art school with Sydney Delevante.

From 1952-6 Maidoff studied with Bernard Meyers, Simon Lissim and Hans Jelenik at the City College of New York, where he won a ‘Rockefeller Study Grant’, the Stearns Prize and graduated with a BSED and MFA.
Maidoff came to Italy for the first time in 1956 having won a ‘Fulbright Scholarship’ which enabled him to continue to study in Florence. He exhibited his works in the Loggia degli Uffizi and at the Schneider gallery in Rome. In this period he met Louis Finklestein, Lee Bontecou, Wolf Kahn, Emily Mason, Howard Konowitz and Jules Kirschenbaum.

Between 1957 and 1958 he continued his post-graduate studies at the New York University, Washington Square, where he met and followed the teachings of Howard Conant and Esteban Vincent.

Between 1959 and 1973 Maidoff exhibited his work in many personal exhibitions. To this day he has exhibited his paintings in more than 70 personal exhibitions.

His work has been bought by many private collectors and public institutions.

In this period Maidoff designed hundreds of record and book covers for Vanguard Records, Harper & Row, Artia Records, Music Corporation of America and the Grover Press.

He created many images which promoted many important events in New York, among the most significant were those at the Philarmonic Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Electric Circus.

At this time he received many commissions for political and cultural events in the city of New York. His work was used by TV networks such as ABC, NBC, and WABD, as well as the poster design for the first public broadcasting FM station of New York.

In 1968 Maidoff returned to Italy. In 1975 he founded the SACI school of art in Florence, which to this day remains one of the most important private art schools in Italy.

Jules Maidoff lives and works in Florence, Italy.
